• London tipper operators will win an additional 50,000 truck movements over five years when construction of the CrossRail project starts.
The massive civil engineering job will create 1.5m3 of spoil—work could start as early as 1995 on the route between Paddington and Liverpool Street.
But first the plans have to fight their way through Parliament. Prime Minister John Major is backing the proposals and a private Bill which would enable the dual six-mile tunnels to be built went through its latest committee stage last week.
"Nothing can happen until the Bill receives Royal Assent, then we are looking at five years of building work before opening at the turn of the century," says London Regional Transport
LRT is currently looking for contractors to build the route and cut half the cost of the £2bn project.
