FUEL ECONOMY trials with 30 haulage companies are to be carried out by Scania in Sweden during 1978.

The hauliers will be covering routes of varying lengths, with an anticipated total distance of 193,000km (120,000 miles). All drivers concerned will have received training in the best methods of achieving maximum fuel economy.

The 30 companies will be chosen, by Swedish road haulage associations, from firms operating on specified routes, A test machine will be made available to each operator for a three week period during which time it will be used by several drivers, allowing different driving techniques to be taken into account.

Each vehicle will be fitted with monitoring equipment including a 24-hour tachograph, an engine revs recorder, a load indicator and Typical results to be mo tored will be the fuel co sumption per ton-mile, t total number of engine re per mile and the running tit in top gear.

There are no plans to exte the trials to the UK, bi should the Swedish resu prove significant, a simi: operation could be carried here.
