THE manufacturers of the NSU non." reciprocating engine (Wankel-Motor), NSU Motorenwerke AG, of Neckarsulm, West Germany, have issued a statement denying reports that the engine would be introduced for automotive use by the summer of this year. Series production of the Wankel-Motor will start neither this year nor next year, stated the company's chairman. Production could not be started until all development work had been completed on thc engine, and this was not yet the case.

Daimler-Benz AG, Stuttgart, makers of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, in a separate statement said that it would be at least three years before studies into the potentialities of the engine were completed. At the same time the NSU Shareholders' Protection Society has denied a statement by Daimler-Benz that a sum amounting to some £500,000 had not been paid by Daimler-Benz to NSU in connection with the engine.

JAPANESE 1960 PRODUCTION

JTAPAN last year produced 308,018 goods vehicles and vans and 8,437 motor buses. Production of commercial vehicles accounted fOr 65 per cent. of the country's total vehicle output, which rose over the year by as much as 83.2 per cent. on 1959 figures.

FRENCH PRODUCTION UP

DURING 1960, 233,613 commercial vehicles were produced in France. This compares with a 1959 figure of 198.126.
