SHQULD Associated Road Transport Contractors, Ltd., be activel y developed by a special highly paid manager, or should a more cautious— and legs expensive—policy be adopted to. promote the interests of the organization?

This question was discussed at the annual general meeting of Artco in London last week. Mr. H. L. Walter, acting chairman, favoured the latter course and pointed out that a manager, with his own office, would entail a great increase in members' subscriptions.

Mr, • D. H. McVeigh, however, thought that Artco should be made to progress quickly. The manager's job would be to co-ordinate individual members' work by informing them of mutual services. Mr. F. A. Parfitt supported Mr. McVeigh's idea. Artco was dormant," he said, and he had not had as much out of the association as he had put in.

Mr. A. Cusick considered that a middle course should be found. and the matter was given to the directors to discuss further.

A decision upon whether to join the safety-first competition of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents or that of the Road Operators' Safety Council was put off until members could consult their drivers.

A net loss of £8 5s. Id. for the year ended September 30, 1955, was reported in the annual balance sheet.

FIVE OUT OF SIX FAULTY

FIVE out of every six vehicles 1" examined at the Ministry of Transport's testing station at Hendon were found to have faults which the inspectors thought should be put right before the vehicles could be considered fully roadworthy.

From October 11 to December 31 last, 6,393 vehicles were tested and 5,322 found to require attention to headlights, foot brakes, steering or lyres, or more than one of these items. Out of 142 goods vehicles of up to 11 tons unladen, 118 needed this attention. In 113 cases the head lights were faulty, although 52 of the vehicles concerned were first registered after 1953.

NEW DRIVING COMPETITION A DRIVING competition is to be ..rt held on a Sunday afternoon in May, at Truro, by the B.M.C. Drivers' Club. Entry will be restricted to members of the club, driving B.M.C. vehicles. Truro City COuncil have agreed to the use of the official car park for the purpose.

This announcement was made last night by Mr. K. J. Murnford, general manager of H.T.P. Motors, Ltd., Truro, at the first get-together of club members of the H.T.P. Motors branch.

A meeting of the W. Mumford section of the club at Plymouth will be held this evening.
