Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

BECAUSE the company's drivers -1-3 were engaged in agriculture and worked within 25 miles of depots, there was no need for records to be kept, Mr. H. F. T. Gough told Whitehaven magistrates, last week. He was defending the West Cumberland Farmers' Trading Society, Ltd., Whitehaven, on seven summonses concerning drivers' recoids and one regarding hours. The company have some 160 vehicles.

The bench did not accept Mr. Gough's argument, and his contention that three of the men concerned could not be classified as drivers because they were engaged on repairs and maintenance to agricultural machinery and rarely drove goods vehicles, was contested.

An inspector of the Ministry of Transport said that anyone who drove a C-licence vehicle, even if for only a few yards, was obliged to fill in a log sheet.

Mr. Gough said that the company might have been remiss in allowing drivers to record times of working which were not actually times of driving. It was difficult to supervise the keeping of 8,000 vehicle log sheets a year.

Fines totalling £8 were imposed upon the company, with £5 5s. advo cate's fee and 12s. 6d. costs. The drivers involved were each fined it.

PUBLISHING DELAYS

I N common with most other periodical publications, The Commercial Motor is affected by a dispute in a section of the printing industry. Pending a settlement there will be delays in publishing The Commercial Mawr and the number of editorial and advertisement pages has had to be reduced.

The publishers regret any inconvenience and disappointment that may be caused to readers and advertisers.
