Ideas Win £350 UTHORS of the best three ideas submitted during 1-1 1955 as part of the suggestions scheme of Leyland Motors, Ltd., have been awarded a total of £350. Mr. Harry Johnson, machined-parts inspector, received £200 for his proposal for saving time in the production of Comet axle tubes. Mr. Jack Barker, machine-tool setter, was awarded £100 for a suggestion resulting in economies in brake-drum machining, and Mr. Cecil Sheldon, turner, gained £50 for an idea in connection with the output of axle arms.
Mr. Johnson and Mr. Barker have each been with the company for 36 years, and Mr. Sheldon for 16.
Brochure Marks Michelin Jubilee
TO mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Michelin I Tyre Co., Ltd., a most interesting brochure was published recently for presentation to all the com
pany's employees. s
It is pointed out in this that, although Michelin became a limited company on May It, 1905, Michelin tyres were well known long before then; in fact, a detachable cycle tyre was invented in 1890. From. 1891, for .several years, tyres of this make were marketed by Paul Hardy of Tottenham Court Road, London, later by the Clipper Company and, until September, 1904, by the North British concern.
The first Metallic tyre was designed for rail-cars and produced in 1936 and the road tyre of this typethe next year, whilst the X tyre arrived in 1948.
The famous Bibendum figure was born in 1898 and was the outcome of the two Michelin brothers being struck by the almost human look of a pile of assorted tyres at some motor exhibition. The main change in " Bib " has been a decrease in the number of " rings " and an increase in their volume.
Snow by the Cubic Yard
THE cold spell in the north has given the Corporation of Edinburgh an opportunity of testing their new rotary snow plough, Which forms part of the equipment of a Ferguson tractor.
The result shows that the outfit is proving highly efficient for use in conjunction with a lorry. It loaded snow into this at the rate of 8 cu. yd. in 90 sec.
