BECAUSE the power and transmis.s:on units are located Forward of the front axle, the German D.K.W. two strokeengined chassis offers maximum amount of unobstructed space behind the driver. The vehicle has been successful as a private car and the maker has recently introduced a 15-cwt. machine which will be mailable either with a 4-ft. 11-in. by 6-ft. 6-in, platform body, or with a van body providing 148 cubic ft. of load space. It was shown at Brusses.
The twostroke engine develops 20 b.h.p. at 3.500 r.p.m.; the R.A.C.
rating is 8 h.p; The gearbox. crown wheel and differential. and the output 'shafts which convey the drive to the frOut wheels. arc built as a unit with the engine.
A box-section girder forms the main frame member, and from' this, outrigger members are carried to form body supports. The suspension is by transverse semielliptic springs, of which one is used at both the front and rear. The whole design is notable for its simplicity, and it is claimed that a D.K.W. will run for 100,000 miles before needing a major overhaul.
