AFTER specializing for more than 20 years in the haulage of tyres and raw materials for a local tyre factory, Mr. T. Allen. of Stretton, Burton-onTrent, was offered the job of driver when his business was acquired on Monday by the Road Haulage Executive. A representative of "The Commercial Motor" who witnessed the take-over was led to understand that "refusal" would have been a euphemism if applied to Mr. Allen's response.

Mr. Allen had previously suggested -to the R.H.E. that he should continue to run his four 6-ton and three 12-ton vehicles for the Executive as the only " tyre fleet" in the district engaged on long-distance traffic to ports.

On learning that this offer had been rejected, nine of the 12 drivers, representing all the old hands. decided to seek other employment. Many of the drivers who had worked for Mr. Allen for periods varying between 10 and 17 years expressed the hope that they would soon be reinstated in their former jobs in the same private enterprise.

Upwards of 15. per cent. of the outgoing materials carried in Mr. Allen's vehicles comprised carbon black, which penetrates any type of clothing. At least two cold baths (ideally) and one hot bath are required to cleanse it from the skin. ror this work, Mr. Allen paid 3s. a ton "dirt money," which the drivers considered adequate. It was reported that the Is. a ton dirt money" offered by the R.H.E. was riot acceptable to any driver.

The fleet comprised two E.R.F.s, three Jensens (one fitted with a lift-van body) and two Fodens.

Mr. K. Firth Butterfield..F.A.L.P.A.. of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, who acted as valuer and negotiator for Mr..Allen. gave the written-down value of the fleet as 0.307, subject to betterment or worsement. The stock valuation was £1,874, subject to agreement.

Mr. Allen had purchased the business of another haulier, Mr. L. Rodgers, in 1942, and a £2,000 advance cash payment was paid by the R.H.E. in respect of each unit of the concern.

The R.H.E. announced this week that the following six transfers took place from January 22-28:— British Road Services (Unit E.355), Derby; Thomas R. Beeson (Unit 0.360), Derby: J. Evans and Sons (Nottingham). Ltd. (Unit 0.359), Nottingham; Wallis Transport (Unit 0.357). Long Eaton: Gorton (Unit E 401), Birmingham, 22: R. E. Paulson (Unit E 35E), Hucknall.
