• What has four engines and gearboxes, ten turbochargers and a combined power output of 1,640kW (2,200hp)? The answer is Dafs pair of TurboTwin 4 x4 trucks with which the Dutch manufacturer hopes to win the truck category in the 10th annual Paris-Dakar rally in January.,
The 1988 TurboTwin rally trucks have the latest 95 Series cabs atop their alloy spaceframe chassis, and boast two engines apiece.
Joining the 15-strong Daf team, which is again led by Jan de Rooy, are two Britons from Leyland Daf. They are 24year-old Chris Ross, a mechanic at LD's workshop at Chor ley; and 26-year-old Vernon Smith who is based at Leyland Dots service workshop, working on prototype vehicles.
Ross will ride in the TurboTwin 95 X2 racing truck, while Smith will be with one of the FAV3600 support vehicles.
