• Iveco has developed an advanced driver information system which will be shown to the public on the Iveco Ford Truck stand at next week's Autotech exhibition in Birmingham.
The new Iveco driver information and communication system comprises a central data processing computer, a high-resolution cathode-raytube display screen and a series of sensors planted in strategic locations around the vehicle.
It is capable of displaying routine driver information, additional functions such as economy readouts and a trip computer; on-board diagnostic and vehicle mission information and maintenance-scheduling information. The package is highly unusual among vehicle systems in relying on glass optical fibres rather than wires to transmit information from sensors to the central computer. Hitherto, optical fibre cables have only been used on vehicles for simpler tasks such as light-bulb monitoring on Jaguar cars. lyeco says the main reason for using fibre-optic cables is their immunity to electro-magnetic interference.
The driver's control pad on the system is also unusual in using touch-sensitive conductive rubber membranes instead of the more usual electromechanical buttons.
Iveco Ford will also show products from its parent Fiat group at Autotech, including robots built by Comau.
