Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• NFC Contract Distribution, part of the National Freight Consortium, is appointing a special training overseer in a bid to bridge the skills gap between its warehouse supervisors and managers of multimillion pound depots. Training supervisors to fill top jobs and recruitment of high-calibre trainees is vital if the company is to stay ahead of the market, says managing director Mark Bedeman.

NFC Contract Distribution needs 40 more line managers for new contracts such as Tesco: "NFC has taken a proactive stance on training for years, especially in graduate recruitment, so we don't expect to suffer," he says.

The company is completing a review of staff and training needs and says it is committed to "growth from within". Last week Bedeman echoed fears in the industry about a shortage of trained managers (CM 26 November-2 December).

He warned other companies that they would "reap the rewards of their own shortsightedness".
