Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

to become increasingly popular according to West German manufacturer. Robert Bosch. TIM BLAKEMORE reports.

Speaking in London last week, Otto Gloeckler, development director of the Bosch division responsible for petrol injection, predicted that in the United States "the carburettor could be replaced almost completely in the next five years".

This year in Europe Bosch has noticed "an exceptional increase" in the number of fuelinjected cars and anticipates that by the end of the year fuel injection models will have increased their market share from 12.8 per cent in 1982 to 18 per cent. In West Germany the market share is likely to increase from 26.4 per cent to 38 per cent.

Mr Gloeckler cited the increasing stringency of exhaust emission legislative standards as a major reason for the strong trend towards fuel injection. "Even carburettors now need electronic control to meet the latest standards," he said.

Bosch is currently developing 8 miniaturised electronic control unit (ECU) that is powerful enough to control all the functions of its injection system and yet small enough to be integral with the air flow meter which fits into the inlet manifold and measures the mass of intake air.

This digital ECU is expected to become available in 1985 by which time Bosch also hopes to be able to offer a smaller, cheaper air flow meter which will be easy to install.

Bosch's new low pressure petrol injection system which will operate at 1 bar (14 psi) is also expected in 1985.
