A BITING attack on EEC legislation designed to hit the haulier and reduce the rail deficit has come from United Road Transport Union general secretary Jackson Moore.

"In the corridors of power in Brussels there are people dedicated to price vehicles off the road in a vain attempt to reduce the railway deficits," said Mr Moore.

He condemned the legislation as "petty and restrictive and in every case very costly to the transport industry."

The number of miles driven was to be restricted, and the transport industry was the only one in which the amount of overtime was checked by laws which governed a worker's leisure time.

He called for scrapping of proposals in the pipeline and the reviewing of all rules and regulations to "establish the present field of play."

Then there should be consultations with everyone to see what of the present rules could be scrapped or modified to make economic sense.

"Our country, people, industry and professional drivers have had as much as they can take of regulations and petty restrictions," said Mr Moore.

The transport industry was quite capable of sorting out its own destiny in a free and open market.
