Gerald R. Hayes, assistant secretary of the National Freight Federation (NFC) Ltd since 1969, has retired. Following the Transport Act 1947 Mr Hayes joined the then Road Transport Executive in 1948 and was engaged first on acquisitions of road transport units and, after the Transport Act 1953, on disposals. In 1956 he became training officer of BRS and in 1958 assistant secretary (organization): in 1963, assistant secretary BRS Federation Ltd and secretary to the board of BRS Ltd and BRS Parcels Ltd, and in 1967 (additionally) assistant secretary of the THC Freight Association Ltd.

Martin Montano has joined Willowbrook Ltd as account executive and will be based at Loughborough but will travel widely to contact customers and dealers. A bus enthusiast by interest as well as occupation, he is a member of the PSV Circle. Mr Montano was previously technical sales representative for Marshall of Cambridge.

T. R. Shaw has been appointed group transport controller for the Central Motor Auction Group and will be based in Leeds. Mr Shaw was previously fleet manager with Montague Burton Ltd and serves on local committees of the FTA. IRTE and ITA.

Tom Price has been appointed a director and general manager of Stanton Commercials, the Coventry firm of commercial vehicle distributors and retailers within the J. & H. B. Jackson group. Mr Price joins Stanton Commercials from Henly's Coventry Ltd., . where he was service director. He was formerly director and gm of Morton's Garage Ltd., which was acquired by Henly's in 1966. In his new post he rejoins Norman Shortland, former chairman of the Morton's group, who became md of Stanton Commercials in October.

Geoffrey S. Moss, as reported last week, has joined the board of Edbro (Holdings) Ltd. He is a former managing director of Cammell Laird and Co (Shipbuilders and Engineers) Ltd, and was a member of the main Cammell Laird board. . . James Cleary moves up from London area manager with Transport International Pool Ltd to general manager and is responsible for the operation and development of the trailer rental company's depots throughout the UK. Hugh Cockett takes over at London and is also responsible for TIP's main UK depot at Grays where he was previously sales executive.

Basil Miller, Southerngas regional transport officer at Portsmouth, has retired after 24 years in the industry, Mr Miller serves on the Transport Users Consultative Council for the South Eastern area, and is a member, vice-president and trustee of the Institute of Traffic Administration. He was presented with an electric fire from his colleagues by George Blundell, transport manager: Mr Miller stressed that his electric fire would only be in use until gas came to the area in which he lives! Michael Powell has joined Fram Filters Ltd as sales director from Simon Telecontrol Ltd (a subsidiary of Simon Carves) where he was general manager. Mr Powell was previously with CAV Ltd for 14 years — part of the time in France with Roto Diesel SA.

Alfred Baynton, who retired in 1948 as general manager of the East Kent Road Car Co Ltd, celebrates his 90th birthday on Sunday. Mr Baynton. who was the company's first secretary when it was formed in 1916, became known to the staff as "little father".

John Wylde, 38, has been appointed transport co-ordinating officer for Leicestershire County Council with effect from January 3. 1972. A former schoolteacher, for the past two years he has run a small bus company, North Downs Rural Transport Ltd, in Surrey, and previously for eight years he studied rural transport services as a hobby. In his new post, Mr Wylde will investigate and attempt to remedy deficiencies in the rural transport System in his area.

Six new directors have been appointed by York Trailer Co Ltd — and not as was inferred by CM November 26 to Neville Truck Equipment Ltd. The six new York Trailer directors are: Peter Bloomfield, component manufacturing: Arthur Doughty, industrial relations; Ron Eamonson, manufacturing at Corby; George Harrison, manufacturing at Northallerton; Cecil Jones, service and equipment; Robert Yuill, product engineering.
