• A total of 10,000 Scania trucks running in the UK by 1976 — that is the target to
which t he Swedish SAABScania automotive group is working, it was revealed in London on Monday. A company spokesman told CM that there would be about 2500 Scanias in Britain by the end of this year — the 1971 sales figure of 800 is well down on forecast, as a result of the current recession.
The company first marketed Scania trucks here in 1967, selling 100 in the first 10 months.
Build-up of' sales in Britain has been much quicker than in France, a comparable truck market in the Scania spokesman's view: but the company accepts that Britain is a particularly difficult and competitive market. New emphasis is to be placed on developing service facilities in the UK; although the eight distributors will not be increased — so that each retains a worthwhile share of the business — there are now 23 Scania service points in Britain. As part of its service build-up. the Swedish company is considering financial loans to distributors here.
Scania has recently appointed a distributor in Eire for the first time, and is now arranging to meet the State requirements there. which demand local assembly even of such items as truck cabs.
