rAA NEW range of tipping semi-trailers is announced by York Trailer Co. Ltd. this week. A channel-section, castellated, rolled-steel frame is used on the models exceeding 14 tons payload and rolled-steel, channel-section beams on the smaller models. Both these frames are of York manufacture.
Other features of the York tipper chassis are a 4-in, step in the frame immediately behind the fifth-wheel rubbing plate, and diamond-section crossmembers providing a high degree of torsional stiffness. A second feature is aimed at reducing the overall height of the outfit: by using channel-section main frames and by spreading the clear width between the longitudinal body runners to a dimension matching the overall width of the main frames, the 4-in.-high swanneck at the front of the chassis is accommodated between the main runners when the body is lowered, and thus the overall height is reduced by 4 in. It will be seen that this also provides a substantial lateral location point for the lowered body, avoiding excessive side stresses being transferred to the tipping ran-is whilst travelling.
Single-axle models are from 15 to 22 tons gross train weight, Transfour twinoscillating axle models for 24 tons and tandem-axle models from 28 to 32 tons g.t.w. are available with the appropriate units plated and braked to comply with the Construction and Use Regulations.
Standard York bodies are offered both in steel and alloy, built as dumpers, or with drop-side dual-purpose bodies for bulk and general cargoes, In conjunction with Peterborough Engineering Co. Ltd. York offer Pengco/ York semi-trailer tippers fitted with hopper or pneumatic discharge equipment for handling granular cargoes. From the York Truck Equipment Division a package deal in tractive unit equipment, consisting of power take-off and control valve installation as well as fifth-wheel and brake coupling fitting, is available.
A standard option on all units supplied is the provision of a trailer-mounted power unit incorporating JAP petrol or Volkswagen diesel engines, to allow tipping semi-trailers to be used with tractive units not fitted with p.t.-o. units.
