Shocking Spot Check Figures

pLAINS that when a Licensing Authority revoked licences of

"cheese-paring companies" whose vehicles had been found defective the appeal Tribunal returned them by the next post were reported in the Commons this week.

Mr. Geoffrey Rhodes (Labour, Newcastle East) noted these reports during a long session of questions about defective vehicles. He asked for confirmation that recent checks in Northumberland and Durham had shown that more than 40 per cent of the vehicles checked were defective.

Mr. Stephen Swingler, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, promised to investigate the allegations and declared: "We want to get more effective enforcement."

Earlier, the Minister had said that in the past 12 months 139,428 vehicles had been examined at spot checks, of which 64,000 were defective in some way and 10,017 had been immediately prohibited.
