Last week's annual dinner of A.R.O. South-Eastern Area was one of the most successful divisional functions yet held by the Association. Some 240 people attended.
Mr. R. W. Semi11, national director, stressed the importance of co-operation between operators and local authorities, notably in connection with air-raid precautions. Councillor C. E. Hillman, Mayor of Tunbridge Wells, who was chairman of the Road Haulage Committee during the 1926 General Strike, reRlied to the toast. proposed by Mr. Sewill.
Sir Henry H. Piggott, South-Eastern, Licensing Authority, in a brilliant speech, declared that fair competition had as its basis fair wages and conditions of employment_ All operators should see that the provisions of the Bill which was being prepared to imple
ment the Baillie Report were carried out.
Major H. E. Cra,wfurd, president of A.R.O., declared that members of the Association were entirely satisfied with the fairness with which the Licensing Authorities had administered the various Acts.
Other speakers were Major the Hon. Eric Long, A.R.O. political adviser; Mr. Gleesoo E. Robinsoo, Metropolitan Licensing Authority, who stressed the advantage of Licensing Authorities being able to come among operators, Mr. Norman Letts and Mr. D. Richardson (chairman).

Another service is to be introduced by A.R.O. Metropolitan Area in the shape of an employment bureau. Under the scheme the Association will supply employers, for is, or so, with checked references from prospective drivers. PASSENGER OPERATORS AND HOLIDAYS WITH PAY.
The C.M.U.A. has made representations to the committee which is sitting under the chairmanship of Mr. W. D. Ross, to considerthe general question of granting holidays with pay to employees in various industries.
The. passenger section of the Association has urged that, if holidays with pay be granted to employees, they should not have to be taken between April and September, as hinted by one or two. witnessesappearing before the
committee. The passenger-transport industry is, of course, at is height during those months, Mr. Beveridge in C.M.U.A.
Mr. R. Beveridge, ILInst.T., of the Scottish Motor Traction Co., Ltd., has been appointed to the national passenger committee of the C.M.U.A. to represent the Scottish C.M.U.A.
