• David Thomas (SkettNr) was warned about possible licence revocation and disqualification when it appeared at disciplinary proceedings before South Wales LA John Mervyn Pugh for the second time in 12 months. The company holds licences in the South Wales and Western Traffic Areas. Its vehicles had attracted prohibitions for a corroded cab, a fuel tank leak, a cracked wheelnut on a trailer, a disconnected speed-limiter and defective tyres.

The LA said the vehicle examiner had also reported that the company's drivers were not using the nil daily defect reporting system; that maintenance records were not readily available; and that letters sent to the drivers pointing out their responsibilities

had not been sent out.

Director John Thomas said the fuel leak happened when the tank overflowed after the vehicle was parked on a hill. He had no answer as to why the letters had not been sent out to the drivers; he had simply not got round to it.

Though accepting there was still a long way to go, Thomas said he had tried since the last public inquiry and he felt things were better. He had employed a former vehicle examiner with 28 years' experience to assist with maintenance once a week.

Adjourning the hearing for a fortnight for vehicle examiners to give evidence, Mervyn Pugh said he wanted the company's fleet to be put through vehicle tests within 14 days, and he wanted the former vehicle examiner to be employed full time until the next hearing.
