• Leyland Daf should be offering a 298kW (400hp) version of its premium 95 Series tractive unit in the UK by the middle of next year.
Although the company is keeping tight-lipped over the details, Commercial Motor understands that the tractive unit will have an uprated version of the long-serving Daf WS282 Kri charge-cooled 11.6-litre engine producing more than 298kW.
The most powerful version of the 95 Series is currently the FT95.380, with a maximum power output of 282kW (378hp) provided by its 11.6litre power unit which has peak torque of 1,526Nm (1,1261bft). The uprated engine in the 298kW-plus tractor will, however, produce additional torque at low engine speeds.
Compared with rivals like Mercedes-Benz, Scania, MAN, Iveco Ford and Volvo, Leyland Daf has lost out in the highpowered artic market by not having a tractive unit more powerful than 298kW.
Despite adoption of the Eaton Twin Splitter as standard on the Leyland Daf Road train, the 95 Series will continue to be fitted with the ZF Ecosplit synchromesh box as the standard transmission.
Daf has also developed a noise-insulation package for the 95 Series.
The package is launched this month in the Dutch market where, under new legislation, operators can claim back 5% of the cost of a truck if the vehicle operates below 79dB(A) — a performance achieved by Daf on all versions of the 95 Series through insulation of the engine and gearbox.
Daf says the insulation reduces noice levels by four or five decibels, and costs Dutch operators an extra £815 (2,800 guilders), though this is more than recouped by the Dutch Government premium.
Daf says the insulated trucks operate at a noise level no greater than that of the average modern passenger car.
There are no plans to offer the insulation in this country unless regulations on noise boost demand. The first Dutch operator to take delivery of 95 Series tractors with insulation is Schot Transport Groep.
