Both dealerships are "very much a new venture", says Smith. "Foden has not sold significant numbers of vehicles there in the past.'' The operations will also provide additional parts and service support on the Continent for UK-based Foden operators and will have back-up from staff at Foden's parent company, Paccar in Brussels.

Foden wants to expand into more European countries, says Smith, although the pace of development in individual coun

tries "depends on market conditions". Long-term plans also include the possibility of establishing more dealerships in France and increasing the number of branches of the existing Spanish dealer, he says. E Paccar has announced its second quarter 1989 results. Its sales have increased by 15% and net income has increased by 13%, compared with the corresponding period in 1988. Truck production continued at full capacity, with Foden Trucks' new twin-steer tractor contributing to a 40% improvement in first-half registrations over 1988.
