Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Mercedes-Benz this week launches the 1726S tractive unit to replace its most popular 38-tonner, the 1625S.

The new 197kW (265hp) tractor uses some of the engine developments from the Powerliner 2 artic range to provide more power and fuel efficiency than its predecesor.

It also features the new "SK" cab, which is identified by its sloping door-window Line and includes a completely redesigned fascia.

Mercedes is offering the option of air suspension on the 1726S drive axle (it was not available on the 1625S). Automatic chassis lurication becomes a standard fitting.

The new Mercedes is powered by the latest 0M442 naturally-aspirated vee-eight diesel. The cylinder bore has been increased from 128mm to 130rrun, increasing engine capacity from 14.62 litres to 15.08 litres. Also featured are larger valve ports for improved engine breathing.

The vehicle's governed speed has been cut by 200rpm to 2,100rpm to reduce friction and noise, and the latest Bosch RQ fuel-injection pump is fitted to increase torque across the range from 1,000 to 1,600rpm. Transmission is provided by Mercedes' GV4 six-speed gearbox with overdrive splitter, giving 12 ratios in all, linked to a 4.2:1 hub-reduction axle giving a geared top speed of 115km/h (71.5mph) with standard tyres. Two alternative axle ratios are available, giving geared speeds of 120km/h (74.5mph) and 101.4km/h (63mph).

The new tractor has a standard 3.2m wheelbase, and unladen weight of 5,865kg (S-day cab version). The 1726S is also available in Mand L-sleeper cab versions. For better corrosion protection, all versions have been given more galvanised parts.

Brake widths on the front and rear axles have been increased by 12.5% and 22% respectively to improve braking efficiency and prolong brake life. Mercedes-Benz has tripled the length of service intervals, which are now every 45,000km (28,000 miles) compared with every 15,000km (9,300 miles) for the 1625S.

Mercedes-Benz has also launched a UK replacement for the 1625 drawbar chassis. The new 1726, like its artic equivalent, is said to be more powerful and more fuel efficient.

The new drawbar prime mover has a standard 5.2m wheelbase, like its predecessor. Air suspension is an option. The four-bag layout is that used on the shorterwheelbase 1726S tractor, and can raise and lower the chassis for demountable bodies.

The air suspension version is designated the 1726L, and is on a longer (5.5m) wheelbase. The option adds 50kg to the chassis weight of 5,970kg.
