THE FIRST national motorway safety campaign started on Thursday this week and runs in the peak traffic period until August 11.
It is being operated for the police by the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) and is supported by the Depa rtment of Transport. Displays, information and video films have been set up at 36 service areas on all English and Welsh motorways.
Launching the campaign in London last week, Gwent chief constable and Acpo traffic committee secretary John Over said: "Many people are unaware of the basic principles of motorway driving."
The campaign emphasises four points — vehicle separation, lane discipline, the use of emergency phones and driver fatigue.
Although the £250,000 campaign is directed primarily at motorists, lorry and coach drivers are by no means excluded. Chief Superintendent 1)avid Little of No Police complimented hgv drivers when he said: "The vast majority are very good professional drivers."
It was pointed out that the encouragement of good lane discipline by car drivers would be of particular hem to hgv drivers who are 4 eluded from the third lane.
Although the 1,600 miles motorway in Britain are I safest type of road, there wi over 4,000 fatal and injt accidents on them last ye These cost nearly £50m.
