THE VOLUME of traffic on British roads last year was four per cent higher than in 1977.
Department of Transport figures show that car and taxi traffic volume (as measured in vehicle-kilometres) increased by five per cent, while goods vehicle traffic, excluding light vans, rose by two per cent. Bus and coach traffic volume did not change significantly.
This overall increase follows the trend of the last 10 years, with total traffic volume increasing by over 40 per cent since 1968. Over the same period goods vehicle traffic has gone up by just 11 per cent Last year goods vehicles covered 21.5 thousand million vehicle kilometres, compared to the 219.8 thousand million vehicle kilometres travelled by cars and taxis.
