• New standards establishing minimun requirements in the use and design o vehicle lifts have been issued by the Britisl Standards Institution.

BS Au 161 provides for the safet) of operators using lifts, and factory inspec tors will be now paying particular attentior to lifts during their regular visits t( premises.

All track-type lifts must be provide( with adequate toe clearance down tilt sides of the tracks. Track-type lifts ut to 3 tonnes capacity must be fitted witl automatic chocks at one end of the track! if of the drive on-reverse off arrangemen or at both ends if of the drive on-drivt off arrangement. All lifts must be fine( with "dead-man" controls. The only excep. tion to this requirement will be semihydraulic centre ram lifts.

In addition to these points, the Standar( specifies that any vehicle raised on E lift with a capacity of more than 3 tonnv must have a manual chock fitted in front and behind at least one wheel. It is expecte( that most lift manufacturers will be ablc to supply kits so that lifts can be brought up to the safety requirements of BS AL 161.
