• Calls to make US school buses safer have come from two independent bodies recently. A task force of the Department of Transportation has recommended that the Federal Government adopts more stringent standards for school bus construction.
Both bodies comment that the buses lack structural strength and that the lack of strong, highback seats had led to injuries. Although only 3 per cent of injuries to children in bus-related accidents occur within the vehicle, higher standards in panel joints, seat design and brakes could improve the situation.
