• Nearly 140 people were killed in fires in commercial vehicles in the United States in 1971. This was revealed in the annual report of the Bureau of Motor Carrier Safety. The report shows that truck fires also injured 311 and cost $ 9m in property damage. However, only two per cent of the 55,158 incidents reported involved fires.

Passengers carriers reported 21 incidents involving fires, only 0.81 per cent of the 2588 reported incidents. The fires caused two deaths and 45 injuries and cost $ 400,000.
