FROM OUR PARLIAMENTARY CORRESPONDENT QPEED limits of goods vehicles are to be raised—but not until the end of the ki year. Mr. Marples, the Minister of Transport, announced in the Commons this week that he proposed to amend the Road Traffic Act so as to increase from 30 to 40 m.p.h. the speed limit applicable to all goods vehicles other than those with drawbar trailers. It will also apply to cars and light goods vehicles drawing caravans or certain other types of light trailer.

He also proposed that the limit for goods vehicles with drawbar trailers should be raised to 30 m.p.h. and certain adjustments made to the present limits for other special vehicles. Mr. IVIarples pointed out that the changes could not be made effective until they had been approved by Parliament, and said be would seek this approval as soon as possible after the summer recess. Parliament is expected to reassemble in October.

k MONO the range of commercial-I vehicle gearboxes to be exhibited at c Commercial Motor Show next month r David Brown industries, Ltd., there .e to be two new designs: the 548/260 re-speed and the TR 557 10-speed units. The 548/260 box has a maximum rque rating of 260 lb.-ft. and is availsic with two sets of ratios. These are 94, 3.79, 2.25, 1.48 and 1 to 1 forward, ith 6.94 to 1 reverse, and 5.36, 2.93, 75, 1 and 0.774 to 1 forward. reverse 2ing 5.36 to 1.

The TR 557 is an adaptation of the andard 557 five-speed box. the range of neds being doubled by means of an axiliary unit fitted between the bell3using and the gearbox to form one tegral unit. In effect the auxiliary secon provides an overdrive on all five andard ratios, increasing these ratios y 1.3 and splitting the .main ratios to rovide 10 equally spaced gear ratios. he layout does not increase the torque atput, of course, and the need for a vo-speed speedometer drive is imihated. Forward ratios given arc 95, 6.10, 4.70, 3.61. 2.78, 2.13, 1.56, 196, t and 0.768 to 1. the reverse ratios ing 7,95 and 6.10 to l.
