Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

PROBLEMS which are stimulating hauliers in the western area to action relate to petrol supplies and the increasing scarcity of good drivers. The committee of A.R.O. in this area is bringing these matters to the attention of the appropriate Ministers.

In respect of petrol supplies, a special plea is made for the western area, wherein there appears to be a serious shortage, having in mind the particu lar needs of the district. Attention has been called to the intensification of the haulage industry in the area, which has resulted in a big increase in essential requirements of fuel, whereas, on the contrary, operators are receiving progressively lower supplies to meet the much higher demands.

On the question of the shortage of drivers it is pointed out that the situation which has resulted from the calling up of men employed in the goodstransport industry, is becoming alarming. It is suggested, in view of the essential nature of the work at present

performed by this industry, that the Minister of Labour be approached with a view to preventing goods-vehicle drivers from leaving the industry to take up employment in munition works, where higher pay is offered.

As indicating the reaction of hauliers to the liveliness of the committee, as exemplified in the matters reported above, it is significant that no fewer than 21 new members have been enrolled in this area of A.R.O. during' the past month.
