• With the use of a new standard aluminium-alloy body, the lightweight version of the York Big Chief tipping semi-trailer can provide a payload of 20 tons within a 30-ton gross combination weight limit. Designated the Big Chief Series II, the new model has stressed sides to provide body strength and allow conventional body runners to be dispensed with.
Unladen weight. for example, of a Series II 30-ton gew with 5ft sides is said to be 4.48 tons and the list price, which depends on the height of the sides, starts at about £2750. The body has 5in. wide crossmembers at 10in, spacing and the range includes single-, tandemand threeaxle models for gross trailer weights of from 24 to 34 tons.
Three models at the lighter end of the range are 26ft long, the four heavier models being 28ft units. Standard width is 7ft Sin. and there is a choice of four standard body-side heights--3ft 6in., 4ft 6in., 5ft and 6ft 3m. Single-ram or twin-ram tipping gear can be specified and various items of optional equipment are available.
