GRANTING, at an adjourned hearing, the application of J. James and Sons, Ltd., for permission to increase fares, the South Wales Licensing Authority declared: " We hope very much that something will emanate from the appellant authorities."

For the objectors, Mr. Alun T. Davies had said that the application was wholly unjustified. It was prepared without the necessary figures and there were discrepancies which merely corroborated the gross errors which took place when a previous application by the company was made 18 months ago.

It was stated that the concern's revenue would benefit by an additional £9,380 in 10 months. In 1951, a surplus of £4,973 had been recorded, and in 1952 the figure was £5,163. The objectors submitted that the increases would raise this to £15,000 in 1953.

Todmorden Corporation has also been granted permission to advance charges.

Ramsbottom Urban District Council has applied for some higher single fares and the abolition of ordinary and workmen's return tickets. In 1951-1952

the undertaking incurred a loss of 0,486, equal to a rate of 2s. 41d. in the pound; in 1952-1953, the loss will be £2,474, equal to 7id. in the pound. The reserve fund was exhausted by March, 1951. If granted. the new fares will make possible a surplus of £566 in 1953-1954.

Belfast Corporation is considering the igtroduction of a 3d. minimum adult single fare, and additions of !,d. and Id. to certain other fares. In a recent report, the general manager of , the transport department, Mr. J. Mackie, declared that an additional £174,000 would have to be found in the new financial year.

West Yorkshire Road Car Co.; Ltd., Harrogate, have applied for a complete revision of fare schedules affecting 115 services. On ordinary single and return fares, a range of increases from fd. to 6d. is proposed. New season, 12journey, weekly and multi-ticket rates arc suggested, as well as the abolition of workmen's single fares and the increase of workmen's returns to 11times the single fare. Similar increases are proposed by Keighley-West Yorkshire Services, Ltd., on 26 services.
