Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Lytham St. Annes Corporations is unlikely to be finally approved for at least a year. It is stated that Blackpool Corporation will not take over the neighbouring system.

Under a co-ordination scheme now being considered, it is proposed that .Lytham should replace the trams by buses, and that there should be inter'operation between the two boroughs. Lytham would provide two-thirds of the new rolling stock and Blackpool a third. Each authority would collect fares in its own area.

MORE CARDIFF TRAMS TO GO?

TURTHER tramways abandonment is contemplated by Cardiff Transport Committee. If the city council confirms a recommendation made, on March 27, by the transport committee, 11 new 56-seater oil-engined buses will be• acquired at an estimated cost of £20,350, so that trams on the greater part of the Roath Dock, Splott and Clive Street route may be abandoned.

According to Mr. William Forbes, transport manager, if the tram track, which is now in a bad state, was renewed, at a cost of £45,000, the loss on the route would be £9,333 per 4:44 annum. If part of the route were dealt with, the loss would be £4,425.

If the section were converted to trolleybus operation, the loss wOuld be reduced to £406 per annum, but the placing of oilers on the route would show an annual profit of £1,248 on this section and £5,776 on the whole route.

LONDON TRANSPORT AGAIN FINED.

YET another fine was imposed on London Transport, last Friday, at the Mansion House, London, for permitting a vehicle to emit excessive smoke. Pleas of guilty were entered on behalf of the Board and the driver, and regret was expressed. The Board was fined £10, with £2 2s. costs, and the driver El.

BIRKENHEAD LICENCES RENEWED.

THE North-Western Traffic Commissioners have decided to renew Birkenhead Corporation's licences, which were the subject of considerable argument during proceedings extending over eight months, Objection was raised by the Mersey Railway Co., principally on the question of fares on routes where combined bus and boat tickets were in operation.

The Commissioners have made no comment, but the licences have been renewed without any modification.

GAS BUS FOR WALLASEY.

()NE of Wallasey Corporation's double-deck buse3 is to be operated experimentally on compressed coalgas fuel.

MERSEYSIDE PLAN FOR CO-ORDINATION.

REPRESENTATIVES of " the four Merseyside local authorities— Liverpool, Bootle, Birkenhead and Wallasey—together with representatives of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, met at Liverpool, last week, to consider the question of Merseyside traffic co-ordination. This constituted the inaugural meeting of the transport sub-committee of Merseyside Co-ordination Committee, and Sir Thomas White was appointed chairman.

The sub-committee considered what first steps should be taken to investigate a comprehensive scheme for the co-ordination of all forms of traffic on Merseyside, including the retention of an expert to prepare a report. It was decided to appoint the traffic managers of Liverpool, Birkenhead and Wallasey, together with the financial experts of these boroughs and of Bootle, to report at the earliest opportunity.

The sub-committee also decided to oppose the application by the Crosvile and Ribble companies for permission to run bus services from Southport to Chester, via the Mersey Tunnel. • LARGEST ENCLOSED GARAGE.

'WHAT is stated to be the largest VV covered-in garage in the west of England has just been completed for the Bristol Tramways and Carriage Co., Ltd., at Weston-super-Mare. The premises will comfortably house 150 vehicles and about 200 in an emergency. The roof has a single span of some 230 ft.

750 LONDON TROLLEY BUSES

BV" the end of the year, London Transport expects to be operating 750 ttolleybuses. This statement was made, on Tuesday, by Mr. T. E. Thomas, the Board's road-transport general manager, to the Select Committee of the House of Commons which is considering the Board's Bill.

52 miles of tramways to trolleybus operation were approved, more than half the tramways would be superseded. Mr. Thomas added that accidents involving trolleybuses were fewer than in the case of trains.

REDUCING HEIGHT IN TROLLEY. BUSES FOR READING.

FOR operation on Reading Corporation's first trolleybus route, two Sunbeam-B.T.H, machines are now in course of construction. Because the route involves the negotiation of a number of low bridges, the chassis have been designed to carry 'doubledeck bodies of moderate overall height. For this reason the motors are mounted immediately behind the front axles, so that the floors of the lower saloons can be practically at frame level.

An interesting feature of these machines is that they may be propelled for short distances by the batteries. For this purpose, provision is made for placing in series 'the two 24-volt accumulators included in the equipment.
