National Board Will Not Argue

THE National Joint Conciliation Board has, in effect, declined to argue with Yorkshire A and B-licence holders, who are persisting in putting into operation their own scheme of wages and general working conditions for their employees.

A letter which has been received from the National Board states that reference to the situation in Yorkshire was made at the Board's meeting in London on March 24, " and, in view of the fact that an award has been made by the independent chairman (Sir Richard Redmayne), it was considered that the matter was at an end."

A speech which might be regarded as a reply to this letter was made by Mr. Charles Holdsworth, chairman of the transport section of Bradford Chamber of Trade, who is also chairman of the Yorkshire Conciliation Board, at a meeting of the section, on Monday.

Mr. Holdsworth urged Yorkshire A and 13-licence holders to adhere to the counterproposals, which he said were now due to operate as from April 1, and stated that a large number Of operators had signified acceptance .of• the new terms.

A few members of the sectionstated that they had not yet signed the terms, because of the circular sent out on March 6 from the North-Eastern Division of the C.M.ILA, which asked them to take no action in the matter pending receipt of a further conaraunica, tion. It was stated that this further communication had not yet been received, and a resolution was unanimously passed re-offering the section's support of the counter-proposals.

Mr. Holdsworth declared that the 48hour guaranteed week and the" higherrating" clause in the National Board's scheme were unworkable.
