BUS AND COACH PROGRESS IN THE NORTH.

Details of Some of the Latest Activities of an Important Passenger-transport Undertaking.

AN interesting scheme of inter-workLing between the two largest bus companies in the North Country, the Northern General Transport Co., Ltd., and the United Automobile Services, Ltd., was foreshadowed at the last meeting of the watch committee of the Newcastle Corporation, when sanction was sought by the two undertakings to rtm through services between Newcastle and Stockton and Middlesbrough, Newcastle and Bishop Auckland. In the past the companies have adhered to a definite boundary line, the former concern operating in the Tyneside district and the northerly part of the county of Durham, and the latter company in the area to the south. In view, however, of the demand of the travelling public for through facilities between the larger centres of population in Tyneside, Wearside and Tees-side districts, the concerns have now decided to operate through vehicles, thus replacing the interchange time-table methods formerly employed.

The Northern General Transport Co., Ltd., has in hand a number of other notable developments. One of the most important of these is the extension of its running garage at Bensham, Gateshead, to accommodate a further 29 machines, so that it will then be capable of housing about 80 vehicles. At Bensham, too, the company has large central repair and overhaul workshops. A large number of new vehicles is on order. The company has recently had a new motor coach station built in Westgate Road, Newcastle—in the heart of the city—and this will be used during the forthcoming season as the starting point for numerous daily coach services as well as for advertised tours.

The Northern General Transport Co., Ltd., has its plans all ready for the opening of the 1928 coach season. A start will be made on Easter Saturday, when the new coach station will be brought into active operation, In addi tion to many daily advertised tours to all parts of the North Country, the company will run its daily coach service between Newcastle and Blackpool, and this season will also run a daily service between Tyneside and the Lakes, instead of twice weekly as was the case last year. Arrangements have also been completed for picking up passengers who intend making these tours from the Wearside district.
