How a South Wales Owner of a Large Number of Houses Proposes to Grant Transport Facilities at Low Fares to Its Tenants.

MHE importance of cheap bus-trans port facilities to out-of-town and suburban residents was demonstrated by an unusual application made by the Allied Building Co., Ltd., Newport, at the March meeting of the St. Mellons Council. The application was for licences to inaugurate a bus service from Malpas to Tredegar Park, Newport.

It was explained, for the applicants, that, some time ago, the Newport Council and private undertakings operating services decided to abandon the issue of season tickets at reduced rates on the Malpas-Tredegar Park route. A petition by patrons for the renewal of the facilities failed.

It was stated that the Allied Building Co., Ltd., owned 400 houses at Malpas and 300 at Geer, and was to erect 300 additional houses alongside the Basseleg Road. Therefore, a decision not to issue any more season tickets on this route was a serious matter to this company and to the occupants of its existing 700 houses. It was considered that it might prejudice people against living in the district owing to the cost of travelling to and from Newport. In view of tps, the company proposed to obtain buss and to ply for hire with them on the route. Incidentally, it was also proposed that the concern should issue seasons at the rate of es. per month from Malpas to Tredegar Park.

The company was anxious to ascertain at first whether the proposed route, via Shaftesbury Street, Dock Street, Skinner Street, Stow Hill and Basseleg Road would be approved by the council. Permission to use the above route and to inaugurate the service was given.
