TIPPER BODY manufacturer Thompsons has spent £450,000 on new laser-cutting equipment so it can produce every part of the bodywork in-house.
Director Bernard Mullaney said the Bystronic Autonom 3015 cutter is one of the company's largest single investments. "It is our aim to produce every part of a Thompsons' body in-house with no subcontracting. This way, we can achieve quality control over everything we produce," he said.
The machine, which will be housed in Croydon, will work alongside the existing machine, bought in 2005. It is three times quicker, allowing Thompsons to improve the quality of the product and meet demand.
"We can produce parts in a couple of hours. The Bystronic enables us to supply our factories more quickly and efficiently — in a real sense, we have doubled our production capacity across many items," Mullaney said.
