PLANS TO extend a rural fuel rebate scheme to another 10 UK towns does not address the underlying issue that fuel duty is too high, according to Road Haulage Association (RHA) director of policy Jack Semple.
He said the news that the Treasury had applied to the European Commission to extend the fuel duty rebate, already in place for several islands around the UK, would do little to help hauliers.
He said: "The big issue is that the industry and the UK is more out of kilter in terms of diesel duty with the rest of the EU than those three places [the three English towns included in the 10] are out of kilter with the rest of Britain."
The towns put forward for a rebate are: Acharacle, Achnasheen, Appin, Carrbridge, Dalwhinnie, Gairloch and Strathpeffer (Scotland); Kirkby-inFurness, Lynton and Hawes (England).
