/ An animal welfare group is calling for better training for livestock vehicle drivers.
The Farm Animal Welfare Council — which advises the Government — is recommending a national training and certification scheme for livestock drivers. It wants compulsory training — covering everything front filling out documents to the care and loading of animals.
"Some drivers might well know a lot about the transport of livestock, but might not know such details as which breeds can be mixed together," says the council's Al Callan.
He is hoping that the Government will approach the Road Haulage Association or the Agricultural Training Board about setting up a training scheme.
The RHA says that any course should be run by the Road Haulage Industry Training Standards Council, or its farming equivalent, the ATB.
