• A disused part of Renault's Dunstable assembly works is to be converted into a full truck dealership which should be fully operational by spring next year.
Renault will run the outlet if necessary, but aims to appoint an independent dealer on the site. Discussions are said to be progressing.
The opening will fill a gap in the network in what is an area of dense truck activity. And it is well placed, close to the Ml.
In April this year Renault opened its own used-truck centre at Dunstable, hut the new dealership will be on a separate part of the site. If it is independently run, the new dealership will probably sell used and new trucks, says Renault.
The Frenchowned manufacturer is in the middle of a three-year plan to rebuild its dealer network, which it concedes was badly starved of investment during the 1980s. Last year several dealers either left or were sacked, but the remaining outlets are regarded as relatively strong, and better motivated, Renault says.
