RAPID PROGRESS is bell made in coach safety, but it w unlikely that the roof streng requirements can be adopt, before next spring, Juni Transport Minister Kenne Clarke said in the House of Col mons last week.
He pointed out that new quirements for emergency E ists came into force on Octa 1, and that statutory testing public service vehicles would introduced next January. Reg lations requiring higher sta dards for braking would apr from October next year.
While progress with Euro. continued on proposals f coach roofs and seat mountini there is still room for impror merit, and this was why BritEhad taken the lead within Euro in pressing especially for stronger roof requirement.
Matthew Parris (Conservatir Derbyshire West) urged Clarke to avoid the temptation do for coaches what had be done for the railways, and not impose expensive safety coni tions, which were out of proportion to the safety bene yielded.
That factor had to be borne mind, agreed Mr Clarke. should be underlined that coa travel remained one of the safE means of transport. He did n think that the coach industry w being damaged and would ma sure that safety requiremer did not cut across the great clE of good that had been done f the industry.
