THE Government has now formally supported the GLC's abandonment of plans for the inner Ringway 1 road in London and the southern part of Ringway 2 from M4 at Chiswick to A20 near Chislehurstbut nevertheless believes that better provision still needs to be made for the orbital movement of traffic in and around London.
The official view on road developments in and around the capital was given last week in a published statement by the Secretary of State for the Environment, Mr Anthony Crosland, on the Greater London Development Plan (HMSO price 38p).
Mr Crosland's statement also proposes that a further section of the originally planned Ringway 2 from A20 to A2 should be deleted but recommends that better provision for traffic should be made to cater for orbital movement in the north, west and south of inner London between the areas marked Cl, C2, C3, and C4 in the diagram accompanying the report (see page 29 of this week's issue). Similarly, better facilities are needed between the radial routes marked B1, B2 and so on to B7 in the diagram.
The DoE consider that the building of the Orbital Motorway M25 will help to relieve the orbital traffic problem, but is not enough on its own.
