• Vehicle refrigeration equipment for medium-size vehicles is now being marketed in Britain by Locomotors Ltd., Barlovvs Lane, Andover, Hants. The equipment is manufactured in America by the Therm-AIR Manufacturing Co. and two versions of two basic models are currently available under the trade name Weathertrol. Depending on the response from users, larger Therm-Air models will be made available; the company produces designs suitable for application to the largest road vehicles.
Both types of equipment being introduced into the UK have separate compressors, belt driven from the vehicle engine on one version and driven from a gearbox power take-off on the other. The basic versions are the A2M and D9, alternative versions of each being the A2E (this has the pto-driven compressor) and D9E which has a standby condensing unit for plugging into the main when refrigeration is needed with the vehicle stationary.
The A2E and A2M are the larger units and have the condenser /evaporator assembly mounted as a unit in the front of the body. The net cooling capacity at 80deg F ambient is 5,800Btu per hr with return air to the evaporator at Odeg F and 14,000Btu per hr with return air temperature 35deg F. In the case of the D9 and D9E the consenser and evaporator are separate. These models are intended for smaller delivery vans such as the BMC EA with the condenser located above the cab and the evaporator inside the body. Performance figures at 80deg F are 9,000Btu at a box temperature of 35deg F and 5,100Btu at Odeg F.
Installation of Weathertrol refrigeration equipment can be carried out either by Locomotors or the customer's own staff; in the latter case advice will be given by the firm. Recommended prices are £288 for the D9 and £639 for the A2M. Specification of the electrically driven compressor for use when the vehicle is stationary brings the cost to £460 for the DOE and £855 for the A2E.
