Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

GLASGOW'S change from trams to buses has brought labour trouble. The transport department have been asked by trade unions to clarify the position concerning about 1,000 men who fear that they may lose their jobs because of the change-over. In reply, a statement has been circulated explaining the position and the implications of the corporation's decision. It contains an assurance that every effort will be made to avoid redundancy and that the men will be absorbed into other jobs as far as possible. Most anxious are 550 men in the permanent way section and 250 in the Coplawhill tram-building works, and there are about 130 tram drivers whine age prevents them being trained as bus drivers. The corporation have stated that there will be .work available in other departments with no break in pension rights if the men are prepared to transfer at the risk of receiving lower wages. At present, most tram men are being trained as bus drivers.

10th CONVICTION: FINED 161

VINES totalling 161 17s. 6d. were I imposed at Dewsbury, last week, on John William Collins, haulier, Navigation House, Mirficld, for using a van without an Excise licence. It was stated that he had nine previous convictions for Excise licence offences. Insp A. Morris said the van was being used on a school meals service at Heckmondwike, but when stopped by the police it was noticed that licence duty had been paid for only the first quarter of the year.

HIGHER PAY-DATE 'RATES of pay for drivers of C-licence vehicles in the ballast and sand industry are still under consideration, but any adjustment that will he agreed will be operative from October 21. This is the date from which higher pay is being given to quarry workers.
