ADDRESSING a gathering of distributors from all parts of Europe on the eve of the Paris Show, Sir William Rootes, K.B.E., chairman of the Rootes Group, made some interesting observations. He said, do not make the sorry mistake of thinking that Britain is down and out. Our industry is beginning to demonstrate greater enterprise than ever before. Our scope overseas is larger.

The various markets demand keen research and the Group is appointing overseas many more resident salesmen and service engineers. Rootes exports in the past year have been three times as great as those of 1939.

T.M. CLUB HOLDS DINNERDANCE THE London area of the Transport Managers' Club held an enjoyable dinner-dance at, the Palmerston Restaurant, Bishopsgate, E.C.2, on October 15. The president of the area, Mr. W. W. Foster,' Minst.T., was unfortunately presented from taking the chair, the position being occupied by the hon. secretary, Mr. W. J. Irons, A,M.Inst.T. The guest of honour was the national president, Mr. H. T. Duffield.

The Club is making excellent progress and has now sorre 500 members throughout the country.

secretary, Mr. S. Foulkes; treasurer, Mr. P. N. Peaks; librarian, Mr. W. Done; committee, Messrs. G. L. Allaway, M.Inst.T„ W. G. Howes, D. McAlpine. and F. D. Thompson.

Membership of this Association is confined to buyers of transport, such. as traffic managers of manufacturers or traders. A series of lectures has been arranged for the winter, the highlight of the programme being the annual dinner on January 15.

CULL resumption of trade between I Austria and the United Kingdom is now permissible, as the result of Orders issued by the Board of Trade.

MR. NELSON CONGRATULATES NEGOTIATING COMMITTEE

THE Road and Rail Negotiating HE in Newcastle recently arranged its 1,000th agreement. In this connection, its secretary, Mr, H. C. Blyth, has received from Mr. S. W. Nelson, Licensing Authority for the Northern Traffic Area, a letter of congratulation.

Mr. Nelson mentioned that the success of the scheme has depended in great measure on the Committee itself, which has obviously carried out its difficult task in an excellent manner. He has had no complaints of undue pressure by the Committee, nor does he recollect any repudiation of agreements with applicants arrived at by the Committee. His work as Licensing Authority had been considerably tightened.

A STATEMENT issued by Mr. A. R.

Stedeford, chairman of Tube Investments, Ltd., announces that the company is offering to the 25,000 men'and women operatives in the works of subsidiary and associated companies a scheme of pensions and assurance, similar to the existing arrangement for the staff, to operate from December I. 1947.

BIG JUMP IN EXPORTS

IGHEST increase since the war has been made in the United Kingdom exports for the third quarter of 1947. Statistics show that vehicles exported realized £45,800,000 during this period— increases of £13,000,000 and £7,000,000 respectively on the first and second quarters of 1947.

MR. CALLAGHAN STEPS OUT
