Karel Van Miert have hammered out a peace plan over Austrian restrictions on EC haulage transit.
The Austrians have agreed to extend their suspension of restrictions on night operations by Community lorries until the end of the year.
It will also postpone its tough lorry noise restrictions pending a general review of transport environmental problems.
In return Germany and Italy will suspend their retaliatory restrictions on Austrian lorries.
Van Miert says he is delighted by the deal, which he hopes will lead to a permanent solution.
Agreement has also been reached on transit rail operations which increase the scope for inter-modal transport. 1=1 Transport Minister Robert Atkins says that the latest EC proposals for CV ernmission standards "do not seem to go far enough".
He has called on the EC to introduce even tighter standards than those being adopted in the US. "In particular this would require substantial reductions in the amount of oxides of nitrogen and particulates emitted by new vehicles," says Atkins.
