a £17.7m contract to supplement the distribution operation of the US supermarket chain, Shaw's which is owned by Sainsbury's.
Exel says that Shaw's is the first major US retailer to contract out such a large part of its warehousing operation to a third party and is currently adapting much of the Sains bury's style of retail distribution management.
The Shaw's contract is being handled by Exel Logistics — Dauphin, which together with Exel Logistics — DCI, make up the American operation. Dauphin handles distribution and DCI, warehousing.
Exel is one of the largest operators of public and contract warehousing in the US, and its position was recently consolidated when parent company, NFC, started trading on the American Stock Exchange.
Last week, Exel acquired book distributor, Distribution Management Services, and it also won a two-year contract with Spanish department store chain, Galerias Preciados.
