• The congestion problems on part of the M25 London ringway have prompted the Freight Transport Association to call for a rethink of plans for a new ring motorway in Manchester.
The ETA is backing plans for the M66 Manchester Outer Ring, on the grounds that it will regenerate areas suffering from economic decline and will relieve congestion on the M66 Denton-Middleton section.
But it wants the Department of Transport to reassess its plans to build the new road as a two-lane dual carriageway.
"The lessons of the M25 around London have to be learned," it says.
"The M25 is not yet complete yet traffic on particular sections is already exceeding its design capacity. Adding on extra lanes later in the day is far more expensive and troublesome, so let's make sure we get the M66 right from the start.''
