• Bob Sculfor, Eaton's UK and Scandinavian regional manager, says that its SAMT, semi-automated variant of its Twin Splitter transmission, which went into full production at the company's St Nazaire plant in France during April, will be in full production by the end of 1987.
The 4x3 Twin Splitter has a torque rating of 1,474Nm (1,087 lbft), but prototypes of 1,762Nm (1,299 lbft) units are already under evaluation to match engine power outputs in excess of 300kW (402hp). The Twin Splitter provick easier driving and encouragi minimal use of the clutch wl keeping engine revs within the most economical power band.
SAMT offers almost total clutchless gear operation through electro/pneumatic a sistanee while leaving the choice of when to shift with the driver.
Full AMT, giving two-pe( control, is planned for 1989 the big "if' on acceptance b the operator will be initial cost.
