THE Port of Dover had a good period during the first four months of 1980; (passengers 22% up at over two and a quarter millions). The number of passenger coaches using the port was over 20% up at 13,181 with the April total (7,415) more than that recorded for the previous three months taken together.

Freight vehicle throughput for the period has remained low (2.34% down at 166,963), the trend established early in the year, road haulage vehicles carried a substantially greater payload. Vehicles using Dover's Eastern Docks during the first four months of 1980 have carried an average payload of 11.95 tonnes, compared with 10.01 tonnes for the same period in 1979.

For the whole port, the cargo carried was 2,301,400 tonnes (approximately one tonne of cargo for each passenger, and representing a growth of 13.06%).
