FOUNDED in 1821 as a civil engineering and bridge building contractor the Dutch firm of Theak Zwalve B. V. is now undergoing a complete reorganisation to concentrate activities in the commercial trailer building sector. In an expansion programme which has already increased production from 54 units in 1978 to 187 last year, and with plans for delivery of 320 trailers in 1980 representing a turnover of D. Fl. 13 million, approx. £2.9 million) — Theak Zwalve is now building a new trailer plant at Oude Pekala which will employ 130 workers. While the company will con
tinue to supply trailers and semi-trailers for all types of applications with conventional running gear its newlydeveloped independent air suspension system has already been enthusiastically received by Dutch operators. Claimed to provide vastly improved, operating characteristics over 'conventional air suspensions the Zwalve design uses short trailing arms supporting stub axles. A marked reduction of body roll protects sensitive loads while tyre wear is said to be improved by up to 50 per cent longer life.
